Lord Marq wasn't the only one finding time during Lord Peake's hunt to speak with the other knights in attendance. Ser Quentyn Ball was one of the premier knights of the kingdom, a military genius, and likely the man who would lead the armies of the Black Dragon when the time came, and it would do Daeron good to get to know him better. "Ser Quentyn would you grant me a moment of your time? I heard a most interesting rumor recently and I would like to hear your views on it." Single Knights-Audience Test Fireball: 6d6k4+8 23

"What rumor?" Fireball is short and to the point.

“I suppose that speculation is a better term than rumors.” he says correcting himself.
“Regardless, I have heard speculation that you intend to have a new set of Kingsguard ready to assemble when the moment is right. Such a cause is not just honorable, but also sensible, and I would like to offer assistance in finding candidates.”

"First we must win, then we can see what heroes remains alive and unwed to fill any such positions as are vacant" Fireball answers the question quick enough to have given the matter some consideration, there is hardly any precedence as to what to do with the present kingsguard should they survive, if they abandon their oaths to King Daeron, then the wall or execution would be their options, but they could be named traitors for supporting a false king, although for this they might perhaps be pardoned like a great many knights and lords surely would in the name of peace.

“Shouldn’t a man making a claim of kingship also assemble the trappings of kingship as well? Nobles and smallfolk alike flock to such symbols.
Moreover, Ser Daemon should expect a great amount of risk before any victory is had whether it be assassins or the chaos of battle. Having six more loyal, perceptive, and skilled bodyguards is only prudent. I’m sure that you’ve already made a mental list of good candidates for the positions.”

Perhaps, but the man is not doing so, and signalling that victory to Ser Daemon would involve Ser Garth Redwyne taking the black or facing the headsman would not be particularly advisable. Better to allow such men as can be relied upon to defend the king with their lives, even if they previously so did for the wrong king, to keep their positions should they wish.

“Sound wisdom Ser, then perhaps could we look to increase the number of sworn swords and shields that surround him? No matter how skilled a warrior he might be, no man can escape the dangers of assassins. Even when the Targaryens had dragons they still kept a cadre of knights about themselves.”

He has more than enough friends skilled with a sword, though a man capable with the sword is not always the one best suited to catch the shadowy hand, so both kinds are needed, and both kinds are present, as much as Ser Daemon allows.

Daeron’s face looks somewhat more relieved to know that Blackfyre has a tighter ring of defense than is apparently obvious.
“I apologize for bothering you with my concerns Ser. It appears that my brother is in better hands than I realized at first, but if you find yourself needing aid when it comes to Ser Daemon’s protection, or the advancement of his cause, know that I am a loyal and leal servant.”

His cause is always in need advancement, but picking fights with Longtable and other places does hardly serve it.

Daeron defends his actions by pointing out that Longtable started this feud and that House Starling has no option but to defend its honor and pride, surely these are things that Fireball of all people can sympathize with? Anyway he argues, Longtable should be viewed as a burden to be avoided, not as a leal ally, especially if it means that House Starling can be brought into the fold instead. Lord Willem’s reputation for honor and chivalry will do more to bolster their image than Lord Piggy’s “allegiance”.

Fireball asks flatly if honor demands coercing the tourney master to pair him up with Lord Eldon in the joust, or walking up to one of his knights to punch in the caase.

Without missing a beat he responds that honor demands that Rennifer’s foul aggression at Summerhall be answered, making no distinction between Eldon and his knight. Honor also requires that knights violating guest rights by tormenting the niece of their host be reprimanded, harshly if necessary. It seems that in none of the conflicts between Houses Starling and Merryweather does Daeron see himself as the aggressor.

Fireball becomes annoyed by Daeron's continued ignorance, snapping back, though without raising his voice, that one who under the pretext of acting as honor demands acts in a way to soil his own loses all claim to the righteousness of his cause.

Daeron likewise becomes irate with the older knight for pointing out the Great Bastard’s hypocrisy without confronting his own.
Finally he snaps, ”That’s exactly why I’m trying to distance Longtable from our cause. We are meant to be a coalition of knights, not grasping rebels and blackguards.
If you feel so strongly about honor then why haven’t you spoken up about it. There are voices here at Whitegrove who feel that it can be secondary to victory, not the first requirement. You’re to lead Ser Daemon’s armies and eventually his Kingsguard, your voice is respected here so join in the debate and lead us now.”
Once he was done his face was red, partially from frustration but mostly from embarrassment for snapping at Fireball himself. He hoped that Ser Quentyn would interpret his words as a plead for action rather than chastisement.
