"And what sort of prize is worth such risk?" The septon reads the young knight's face, carefully gauging his response.

For a knight, Daeron is also a surprisingly eloquent speaker, but try as he might, he is no schemer. To an experienced confessor such as Septon Abelar reading his face is like reading a book and the ambitious gleam in his eye is all that’s needed to know his motivations. “The prize which all men seek, defeating your rivals and establishing dominance. Whether or not you acknowledge it, it’s what caused you to set a mob upon the Merryweathers at Highgarden.”

Abelar dismisses the suggestion with a look. "Come now, you know there is more to life than dominating your rivals. That is what Rennifer Flowers and Norren Wythers do. A true knight fights for a cause."

He bristles at the implied comparison to the Merryweather men. "My noble cause is known by you already, but by knowing the ambitions and motivations of men it will make burning the corruption away from the kingdom that much more complete. In this we surely share a goal?"

Abelar fights the urge to pound his point home harder. Not too much, now."Burning away corruption requires that power be placed in the hands of those with staunch virtue and steely hearts. But it also requires that those people stand for principle. If your answer is to fall in behind some heroic leader, you must ask yourself--what does this person mean to do? What promises has he made? What changes does he mean to bring?" The septon gestures to emphasize his point. "I have watched many a man rise up, full of chivalry and resolve, only to be overmastered by the requirements of leadership. Naysayers must be mollified, even when it is easier to brush them off. Those with entrenched interests must be confronted, even when it is easier to abandon principle to gain their support."
"So when I hear that you mean to take on the Blackwoods, my question again is: why? Is there some atrocity this will prevent? Some law to be vindicated? A cause beyond the game of thrones?"

If it can serve both purposes, then what is the harm?He deliberates for a moment before going on an odd tangent that carried little weight with the stern septon. "Growing up at Driftmark I spent much of my youth out on the sea, sailing and learning the water. One of the first lessons my uncle Laenor taught me was to read the sky and how to predict the weather. To summarize a very long and boring anecdote, when you see a storm coming you react.
A storm is coming Septon and it is too late for any of us to find safe harbor to wait it out. The Blackwoods' heathen army is the first of these winds and I will not sit idly by and be blown apart by it. Neither should you."

"Because mine is the cause that exists within the Light of the Seven and theirs seeks to return us to making sacrifices to trees and to abandon knighthood. No small surprise given that Bloodraven is a sorcerer and that the king himself has never been anointed with the seven holy oils.
It seems that we both might be able though to get what we desire.
Many knights here in the Riverlands and in the Reach are pious and might be willing to take additional vows, perhaps even those of a septon's to better live up to their beliefs. Similarly, if you know of any septons who are of a more martial bent than their fellows, they might be viable candidates for earning their spurs, especially those who might have functioned as squires in their past. A few words to the right ears might make these things happen for you, and while I will not endorse the reanimation of the Faith Militant, I don't see how allowing qualified and dutiful men to take upon additional vows can harm anything.
In the meantime, I require a politically neutral orator to show the lords of the Riverlands and the Reach the danger and duplicity of House Blackwood and their private army. If such an orator believes in his abilities, he might even look to recruit men to stand against the oncoming storm of heathen darkness."
Offering compromise proposal of a quid pro quo arrangement in that Abelar spreads inflammatory news of the Raven's Teeth and in exchange for Daeron helping to recruit knights to take Septon's vows as per our PMs.

Abelar smiles--a rare sight. "Now that is a noble cause. If you can find the right men, I would be willing to help you." After that, it's just details to be hashed out, which they achieve over the next half-hour.
Compromise accepted according to the terms below, pasted from our PM conversation: Ok, let's say that we're looking at Ser Harold Osgrey, Ser Cuthbert Mandrake, and Ser Aubrey Ambrose. If Daeron can get one of these (with a requirement to attempt to get the most impressive among them, which I assume is Aubrey) to very publicly take a septon's vows and retain their knightly duties, then Abelar will undermine the Blackwood army in the ways described above (exposing it, denouncing it as a heathen army among the company of other septons, turning the pious against it). If Daeron can get all three of these knights to take septon's vows, then Abelar will also inflame the smallfolk against the army.

Daeron gives a forced smile, agreeing with the septon.
“May the Seven bless us both in our endeavors.”
