"Everything is made for a purpose, certainly, and I prefer the versatility of the bastard sword myself." He pats the sword sheathed on his hip to prove his words. "Everyone knows a man can put one and two handed techniques to use with it, but there are other considerations which might be less considered. Its length, weight, and balance make it an ideal lever and very effective when wielded in the half sword fashion, effectively giving yourself a short spear to wield. Or one may put the pommel and crossguard to work as if its an impromptu hammer... a small impromptu hammer." He tilts his head in consideration before continuing. "But to have the range advantage of the spear, along with its thrusting speed, and to be able to drop it and draw a short sword and get inside the effective range of your enemy, is certainly advantageous. If somebody got inside my range while I was wielding this, my best options would be to regain the distance, grapple, or use the sword in a disadvantaged manner." He has clearly thought about this before, but it may have been awhile and there is a light in his eyes which testify to his passion for the discussion at hand.

"All true. I suppose favouring the bastard sword is a calculated risk - choosing it for its versatility and hoping that it will do in the circumstances given to you, because it's too impractical to carry a weapon for every eventuality on your person at all times."
Trystane chuckles a little, finding the image of someone adorned completely in weapons to the point of impracticality quite comical.
"I confess you've now made me want to pick up the spear again and have another go at mastering it properly. Might give me an edge in future. I was serious about both of us doing it, you know. Something to keep us from getting bored once we've gotten over the novelty of being home, perhaps. Because the Gods know the Starkwood isn't exactly teeming with exciting nightlife."

"I would be more then happy to focus on training upon our return to Starkwood lands. Especially with spears, and I couldn't imagine a weapon more likely to be the most commonly found on any battle field, so we may as well sharpen up with them before we start seeing any of those." It was definitely something that they could work on. Especially with Trystane expressing the interest and consideration of them that he was. Mikel began determining important aspects to consider during their training, the spears range, its use against armored and unarmored men, how to wield it with consideration to comrades nearby, and how one might instead wield it when he was surrounded only by enemies. On, and on, and on it went...

Trystane can see Mikel's mind at work and chuckles.
"You're planning already aren't you. Don't fret, I'm not judging. It's good to be enthusiastic about improving. I just wonder if there's anything else that you get so enthusiastic about? It occurs to me I rarely see you doing things that aren't to do with knightly pursuits."

"There are many things I enjoy in life, but I do not believe any of them are so important. Argue with a woman you fancy and you can cool down and come back to apologize. Purse stolen? Extremely unfortunate, but you will live to make more. Man with a knife running at you because he wants to gut you for some reason he doesnt care to share with you? Nothing to count on there but skill and luck, and that luck only comes from your skill. There will be no chance later to try something different. Your entire life might end, or be forever and horribly altered there after."
"The other Knightly pursuits are less interesting. So much hinges on making people believe you to be one way that an image becomes more valuable then a true and well lived life. Its like everybody knows how they want to be seen, but they dont understand why, and so they get to that image by any means they can. Buying it, manipulating for it, becoming hollow bits of paegentry who have warped themselves into something which is the opposite of what they want people to think they are."
Mikel smiles. "I also enjoy reflection and philosophical discussion. I suppose I tell myself that its all related anyways."

"That's a good point, I'll give you that. The immediate threat of death is more pressing than most concerns. You sound rather disdainful of tourney pageantry for someone who participates in it. Do you think it is truly so corrupted by disingenuous politics and facades?"

"When I was Knighted tournaments were how I sustained myself. I had been a hedge knight for ten years, and preferred the freedom of the road to service to some Lord. I think that I always saw the paegentry and thought low of it, but I just showed up to do my part and enjoy myself. I was also my own master. Whether because of the black tournament itself, the times, or simply that I am now a part of things since taking service to Lord Starkwood, it stands out to me much more then before and also directly effects me in one way or another. Soon it will effect all of us."

[P2.5] Homecoming - Initiative v. Trystane: 4d6-2 12
The long ride home involved many long silences and much conversation over a wide variety of topics. But one subject which continually arose was that of anything martial. The two had decided to become partners in a disciplined daily regiment of practice at arms once they arrived back on Starkwood lands, and this particular morning saw them on foot, armored, and armed with spears and daggers.

Homecoming - Initiative: 4d6k4 10
Trystane is accustomed to being quicker off the mark when sparring, but he is out of practice with the spear, and less tested in battle than Mikel, so the hedge knight takes the early advantage.

The two sparred freely for some time before breaking to discuss their thoughts. The spear wasn't the best against a man in plate, but that did not make it useless. They ran a variety of drills, using high and low thrusts and moving quickly off the line of attack to prevent the other from getting too close. They experimented with swings and while they were slow, if they connected they proved quite jarring and hinted at a promise of broken arms and misoriented minds. On and on it went, free sparring, discussion and drills, theory, and sparring to test the recently developed theories. Then more drills to reinforce worthwhile techniques and tactics.
